2021 marks George Tice’s sixty-eighth
year in photography. Over the past fifty years he has published
twenty-one photography books among them: Fields of Peace, Paterson, Urban Landscapes, Seacoast Maine and his most recent Seldom Seen.
Working exclusively in black and white he has made the fine print and
the photography book his primary focus. He is drawn to vestiges of
American culture on the verge of extinction – from people in rural or
small-town communities to urban and suburban neighborhoods that are
often in decline.
His prints are in numerous collections including the Museum of Modern
Art, The Getty Museum, the Newark Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of
Art, where in 1972 he was honored with a solo exhibition, Paterson, New
Jersey. In 2002, George Tice: Urban Landscapes
was exhibited at the International Center of Photography in New York.
This book received a “Golden Light Award” from the Maine Photographic
Workshops and was chosen “Honor Book” by the New Jersey Council for the
Humanities.
He has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, The
National Endowment for the Arts, the Bradford Fellowship (UK) and the
New Jersey State Council on the Arts. In 2003 he received an Honorary
Doctorate of Humane Letters degree from William Paterson University. In
2015 he received the “Lucie Award for Lifetime Achievement.”
Tice is a tenth generation New Jerseyian and makes his home on the Jersey Shore.
