gelatin silver print

Chris Gower specializes in large-format, black and white film photography, creating his prints by hand on gelatin silver papers. Chris studied privately with photographer and master printer Alan Ross. He has photographed with large format cameras since 2000, using the view camera to photograph landscape and architectural subject matter.
Chris is delighted by the magic, wonder, and inspiration of traditional black and white photography. His work follows two themes: the natural world and the human-altered landscape. Within those themes, he seeks subject matter best suited to the tones and textures of black and white film photography. Chris was born in Tokyo, Japan, and was raised in Normandy Park, Washington. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from the University of Washington. He and his wife Sheri have enjoyed living in Salem, Oregon, since 2009. Chris' print for this auction is entitled, Silos, The Dalles, Oregon (2011). To make this photograph, he used a Sinar 8x10 view camera, a Schneider 150mm lens, a deep yellow filter, and Ilford film. This gelatin silver photograph was printed on Ilford fiber base paper, and was toned in selenium. This image is from the first print session with this negative, and for Chris, captures a very rewarding day of photography. |
