Born in New York City and descended of Greek Sephardic Jewish ancestry, Morrie Camhi lived, worked and taught in San Francisco after attending UCLA. His main body of work falls into the category of documentary photography, and yet a deeply personal and "felt" quality shines through in his depictions of ordinary people; Camhi had an abiding concern for the welfare of minority groups around the world. His study of U.S. prisons and prisoners (published as The Prison Experience, 1990) is one of the more significant projects in American photojournalism. |
