Christopher C. Dierdorff

Princess Margaret, 1996

Fujicolor Crystal Archive print

Christopher Dierdorff is a portrait photographer quite unlike any other. Using a specially rigged camera and flash system, he poses and shoots his subjects - in embassies, hotel lobbies, workplaces, wherever he finds them - in a close-up, confrontational manner and displays the results in very large (30x40 and 40x50 inch) color prints. The final image, he maintains, may be initially uncomfortable to look at because of its size, but is revealing in a remarkably visceral way. Dierdorff has photographed some of the world's most celebrated people, including Bill Clinton, Salman Rushdie, Lech Walesa and Princess Margaret of Great Britain.
