image 12 x 16
This image of a dried specimen of tree lungwort came from the forest floor in Marcola. The tree lungwort is a lichen indicator species of old growth forests, where it contributes nitrogen to the forest ecosystem in the litter layer and is eaten by snails and moose. Humans have long used tree lungwort to treat lung diseases, and is said to be used in Siberia as a flavor for beer.
